NORTHFIELD, Minn. – In its final match of the 2018 season, the Carleton College volleyball team fell at crosstown rival St. Olaf College in four sets (25-17, 20-25, 25-15, 25-21).

The two foes traded blows early in the opening set, battling out to a 12-12 tie midway through the frame. From there, St. Olaf (24-6, 7-4 MIAC) claimed the next four points to give themselves some room to breathe at 16-12. After a Carleton timeout, the Oles stretched their advantage to six at 19-13 before the Knights (12-11, 2-9 MIAC) chipped away a bit. However, the deficit proved too much to overcome as Carleton dropped the first set by a 25-17 tally. Overall the game saw 10 ties and four lead changes.

The Knights found some energy at the outset of the second frame and quickly went up 4-2. A 6-1 run for St. Olaf, though, gave the home team an 8-5 edge. Then, the Knights went on a mini-run of their own to tie things up at 8. Carleton and St. Olaf battled back and forth until the Knights earned a 19-15 lead to force an Ole timeout. They held off St. Olaf late to win the set, 25-20, and even up the match at one game apiece.

It was the Oles who had the hot hand early on in the third, as they sprinted out to a 7-3 lead to prompt a Carleton timeout. St. Olaf worked its way to a six-point advantage at 14-8 to force yet another Knight timeout. Carleton shaved the deficit a bit, but the Oles were simply too strong in the third frame and wasted no time in earning a 25-15 set victory to come within one game of the match.

In the early stages of the fourth set, parity prevailed as the teams were tied eight times en route to a 10-10 score. However, St. Olaf initiated a timely 6-1 run to prompt a Carleton timeout at 16-11. Not to be deterred, the Knights got it back within two at 19-17 St. Olaf, but the Oles did just enough down the stretch to put the set and the match away, 25-21.

For the Knights, Abby Loe (So./Apple Valley, Minn.) led the way with 12 kills and a block. Senior co-captain Elyse Wanzenried (Minnetonka, Minn.) was right behind Loe with 11 kills. She added 11 digs and three blocks in the effort, once again doing a little bit of everything for Carleton. Fellow senior and co-captain Faith Skinner (La Crosse, Wis./Central) collected nine kills and five digs. Inger Shelton (Fy./San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) facilitated and totaled 35 assists and 12 digs in the match.

Summer Reid and Lauren Rewers each put down 14 kills for the Oles. Lexi Wall ended with 47 assists.

The match officially marked the end of Carleton’s 2018 campaign, as well as the impressive careers of Wanzenried, Skinner, and Jona Plevin (Sr./San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker). Under first-year head coach Jacki Smith, the Knights finished with a winning record overall at 12-11.
