Knights Drop Second Straight West Coast Contest

November 29, 2008 at 6:25 pm

NEWBERG, Ore. -- Hannah Oken-Berg (Sr./Portland, Ore./Lincoln) had 16 points and eight rebounds but it was not nearly enough as the Carleton women’s basketball team absorbed its second straight defeat, this one by a 75-48 score at George Fox University.

The Bruins’ Keisha Gordon had 30 points to lead all scorers. Her afternoon included six three-pointers–all in the first half–and six rebounds. Two other players also reached double figures for George Fox, including Kristen Shielee’s 16 points and a dozen more from Arianna Mohsenian on four three-pointers

After a scoreless opening minute, George Fox (4-0) jumped in front on Gordon’s three pointer and did not relinquish the lead the remainder of the contest.

Oken-Berg’s basket with 9:37 remaining in the first half pulled Carleton within a point at 18-17, but the Bruins closed the half on a 17-4 run to remove any doubt about the outcome. The Knights (0-2) cut the deficit to single digits only once in the second half.

The Bruins used their long-range shooting to jump out to the early advantage, going 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) in the first half from beyond the arc. George Fox, then focused its offense on the interior, scoring 22 of 40 second-half points in the paint.

Other top performers for Carleton were turned in by Sarah Kunelius (Sr./Eagan, Minn.), who had seven points and five rebounds, and Annie Eckhoff (Jr./Northfield, Minn.), who tallied nine points off the bench.

The Knights conclude their three-game trip across the Beaver State with a contest at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. That game tips off at 7 p.m. local, 9 p.m. back in Minnesota.
