NORTHFIELD, Minn. – A 20-1 run in the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter elevated the Carleton College women’s basketball team to a 59-57 victory over the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday afternoon at West Gymnasium. The Knights have now won four of their last five games.

“This has been quite a week,” remarked Carleton head coach Cassie Kosiba. “I'm extremely proud of our resiliency and our energy.

“I'm very pleased with our increased efforts on the offensive boards as well as the willingness to share the ball. These two areas carry a lot of weight throughout the course of the game.”

Carleton (5-12, 3-7 MIAC) took its first lead at 5-4 early in the opening quarter. The Blazers reclaimed the lead courtesy of a well-executed three-on-one fastbreak to make the game 6-5. It was a lead that Saint Benedict (11-6, 7-3 MIAC) would not relinquish until there were less than five minutes remaining in the game.

The home squad shot 24 percent from the field in the first half and found itself in a 29-19 hole going into halftime. The deficit grew as large as 15 points during the third quarter, and Carleton trailed 46-33 heading into the final quarter. That is when the Knights started clicking on both ends of the court.

Sarah Waldfogel (Jr./Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) and Katherine Miles (Jr./Park Ridge, Ill/Maine So.) started the rally with back-to-back jumpers to bring Carleton within single digits.

Following a Saint Benedict free throw, Waldfogel drained a three pointer from the left wing and Cece Leone (So./Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) hit an uncontested triple from the right side. Suddenly it was a 47-43 game. Another defensive stop was followed by Waldfogel converting an old-fashioned three-pointer play to make it a one-point game with 5:49 remaining.

The Knights took the lead on a nifty post move from Samantha Cooke (Fy./Chesterfield, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy), which set the score at 48-47. Yet another open three-pointer from Leone gave Carleton a 51-47 lead, their largest of the game up to that point. Leone followed up on the next possession after a Blazer turnover with a layup in traffic to complete the game-changing 20-1 run. During that stretch, the Carleton defense held the Blazers to 0-for-7 shooting with three turnovers.

Leading 56-51 with 1:45 yet to play, the Knights turned it over twice in a row, and the Blazers capitalized. Later a drive from the right wing by Saint Benedict’s Chelsey Guetter tied the game at 57-57 with 16 seconds left.

Carleton point guard Katie Chavez (Fy./Westminster, Colo./Holy Family) was fouled in the backcourt and hit both of her attempts from the charity stripe to give Carleton a 59-57 lead with a mere 5.5 seconds to go. A foul by Chavez 70 feet from the basket gave the Blazers a chance from the line, but Allison Newton missed both free throws before Carleton tipped the rebound out of bounds under the basket. The Knights stole the inbounds pass and secured the thrilling victory, 59-57.

Leone paced the Knights with 15 points and nine rebounds. Waldfogel bucketed 13 in the effort, including eight during the momentum shifting rally. Cooke and Anne Hamilton (Jr./Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) each scored 11 points and pulled down seven and five boards, respectively.

The Blazers had seen victory in 13 straight matchups against Carleton, but the Knights have now won two of the last three meetings.

Next up for the Knights is a trip to Winona, Minn. on Wednesday, Jan. 25 to take on Saint Mary’s University. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m., and a live audio feed will be available on KDHL 920AM in the Northfield/Faribault area and worldwide via Knights Online.
