ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s basketball team dropped a second consecutive game to a nationally-ranked opponent, this time falling 71-46 at No, 16-ranked University of St. Thomas. Katie Chavez (So./Westminster, Colo./Holy Family) matched her career-high with 20 points to pace the Knights.

St. Thomas (11-2, 6-0 MIAC) never trailed in notching its 40th consecutive victory against MIAC opponents.

Carleton (5-7, 2-4 MIAC) trailed just 13-11 after Cece Leone (Jr./Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) knocked down a jumper midway through the first quarter, but the Tommies went on a 23-5 run over the next 10 minutes and eventually carried a 39-23 advantage into intermission.

Chavez accounted for 16 first-half points on 6-of-10 shooting, including four 3-pointers. However, the rest of the Knights were unable to get on track as the St. Thomas defense held Carleton to 29 percent from the field during the opening half and 28 percent for the game.

Carleton’s hopes of overcoming the deficit were erased during the third quarter as St. Thomas slowly added to its lead before the Knights outscored their hosts over the final quarter.

Anne Hamilton (Sr./Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) matched her career-best with three blocked shots and added nine rebound, three assists, and three steals for the Knights. Sarah Waldfogel (Sr./Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) chipped in six points and added three rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.

Hannah Spaulding pace four Tommies in double figures and she accounted for game highs of 22 points and 12 rebounds.

The Knights’ will look to bounce back as they step out of conference to face Bethany Lutheran College on Monday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m.
