NORTHFIELD, Minn. – A career-best 21-point performance by Katie Chavez (So./Westminster, Colo./Holy Family) helped the Carleton College women’s basketball team snap its four-game slide with a 71-66 triumph over Hamline University.

“I am proud of the effort by everyone tonight,” said Carleton head coach Cassie Kosiba. “This was a game of runs, and thankfully we made one of our runs at just the right time.”

Carleton (6-8, 3-4 MIAC) shot 56 percent in the first period and used a scorching 18-2 run to end the quarter with a 23-9 lead. The scoring surge was led by Chavez and Cece Leone (Jr./Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) with eight and six points, respectively.

However, the Pipers (2-12, 1-6 MIAC) were unwilling to cede the game just yet and bounced back with a 13-0 run to start the second quarter. Carleton answered with a 7-1 spurt, but Hamline closed the opening half on a 12-3 burst and took a 35-33 lead into the break.

Carleton closed the third quarter with a 9-2 run to move in front for good. Hamline made it a one-possession game four different times over the final 6:12 of the contest, but the Knights were able to fend off the final challenges and secure the victory.

With the Knights clinging to a 69-66 lead, Leone came up with a clutch block with 11 seconds remaining, and Hamline missed a game-tying three-pointer. Anne Hamilton (Sr./Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) sank a pair of free throws to close out the 71-66 win.

Chavez had nine points in the final period, and the Knights went 9-of-11 at the free-throw lane to maintain their lead.

In addition to her third 20-plus point game of the season, Chavez added six rebounds, two steals, and two assists. Sarah Waldfogel (Sr./Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) also came up big for the Knights, notching 11 points, five boards, and two assists. Leone contributed eight points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while Hamilton matched her career-high with five steals and chipped in seven points and six rebounds.

Carleton goes right back out on the road and travels to Concordia College-Moorhead for a 3 p.m. contest on Saturday, Jan. 13. A live audio broadcast of the 1:00 p.m. contest can be heard on KDHL 920 AM in the Northfield/Faribault area and worldwide via Knights Online.
