WINONA, Minn. – Playing without its two top scorers, the Carleton College women’s basketball team did all it could to pick up a road win, but the Knights went cold down the stretch and absorbed a 59-49 setback. The result moved Carleton into a three-way tie for fifth place in the conference standings.

Cece Leone (Jr./Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) notched her fourth career double-double, tallying 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to pace three Carleton (7-9, 4-5 MIAC) players in double figures. Anne Hamilton (Sr./Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) chipped in 12 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks, while Sarah Waldfogel (Sr./Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) contributed 10 points.

Trailing 39-30 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Knights refused to let Saint Mary’s (9-7, 4-5 MIAC) pull away and closed the period with a 9-0 run that knotted the score heading to the fourth quarter.

The teams exchanged the lead eight times during the fourth quarter, and Hamilton’s jumper put Carleton in front 49-48 with 4:30 remaining. Unfortunately, in a repeat of the first matchup between these squads back in December, the Knights struggled to score over the final moments as this time Carleton missed its final seven shots and committed four turnovers.

The Cardinals capitalized on Carleton’s misfortune and closed the game on an 11-0 run to pull out the victory.

Saint Mary’s turned 23 Carleton turnovers into 21 points, and the Cardinals enjoyed a 26-12 advantage for points in the paint.

After playing 8 of 10 games on the road, the Knights will play 6 of their next 7 at West Gym, beginning with a 3 p.m. contest against Bethel University on Saturday, Jan. 20.
