NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s basketball team had five players finish in double figures, including a game-high 19 points from Katie Chavez (So./Westminster, Colo./Holy Family), but the Knights dropped a 72-68 decision to visiting Augsburg University.

Chavez, who missed the previous two games due to injury, returned to the lineup and went 7-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-8 from three-point range, to go along with five assists.

Augsburg (10-7, 6-5 MIAC) used a 22-5 run spanning parts of the third and fourth quarters to turn a 10-point deficit into a seven-point advantage. The visitors extended the margin to nine before back-to-back 3-pointers by Cece Leone (Jr./Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) and Sarah Waldfogel (Sr./Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) made it a one possession game

A very deep triple by Chavez pulled the Knights within 67-66 with 45 seconds remaining, but the Auggies’ Camryn Speese converted an old-fashioned three-point play to keep the visitors in front down the stretch.

Leone and Anne Hamilton (Sr./Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) each had a double-double with Leone putting up 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Hamilton adding 10 points of her own alongside 10 boards.

Waldfogel chipped in 10 points for the Carleton effort, while Katherine Miles (Sr./Park Ridge, Ill./Maine So.) added a career-best 12 points while filling in for the injured Samantha Cooke (So./Chesterfield, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy).

Speese and Tamira McLemore both tallied 14 points and six rebounds to pace Augsburg.

The loss drops Carleton two games back in the playoff chase with seven contests remaining in the regular season.
