NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Cece Leone (Sr./Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) recorded her sixth career double-double performance as she finished with game highs of 17 points and a career-best 14 rebounds, but even that was not enough as the Carleton College women’s basketball team dropped its home opener to UW-River Falls, 64-67.

“We came into this game wanting to limit the UW-River Falls points in the paint and keep them off the offensive boards. I'm really proud of our effort in those two categories,” said Carleton head coach Cassie Kosiba. “Offensively, we are still a little raw, and we need clean up our spacing and passing, but overall I like the direction we are headed.”

The Knights (1-1) out-rebounded the visitors 44-38 in the game and 11-8 at the offensive glass. Carleton also built a

Three balls were flying early at West Gym as the game’s first nine points came from behind the arc. Anna Hughes (So./Glenview, Ill./New Trier), who finished with 11 points, got the scoring started for the Knights as she drained her first shot of the game, but UW-River Falls (2-1) hit on 4-of-8 attempts from long range during the opening quarter to build a slight 16-14 lead.

The second quarter of action went back-and-forth with neither team shooting the ball particularly well. Carleton connected on 31 percent of its attempts, while the Falcons were only 5-of-18 (27 percent) from the field. Trailing 30-21 with 2:20 remaining the half, Leone and Maris Daleo (So./Davis Junction, Ill./Stillman Valley) accounted for the game’s next seven points to pull the Knights within 30-28 at halftime.

The third quarter saw the offenses come to life, and Hughes converted layup with 1:37 left in the period to knot the score at 46-46. UWRF’s Tessa Howard converted an old-fashioned three-point play that sparked an 8-0 run over the remainder of the period.

Erica Ellefson (Jr./Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) racked up 11 of her career-best 16 points in the second half to help keep Carleton within reach. The Knights trailed 58-47 with 7:15 still to go before Hughes and Ellefson drained back-to-back triples to make things interesting.

Consecutive layups by Leone pulled Carleton within 66-64 with 45 ticks on the clock, and then the Knights got the defensive stop they needed.

The hosts missed a jump shot, and UW-River Falls converted one of two free throws in the closing seconds, but Carleton could not get off the game-tying shot before time expired.

Jill Yanai (Fy./Glendale, Calif./Glendale) was the fourth Knight in double figures, chipping in career-bests of 10 points and four steals.

The Falcons had three players finish in double figures. Taylor Paulsrud had 13 points to pace the visitors, thanks to her 3-of-4 shooting from long range, while Brianna Leahy and Crystal Pearson chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Following a break for fall term final exams, the Knights will return to West Gym for a pre-Thanksgiving game against University of Dubuque on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. A live video broadcast and live stats will be available via Knights Online.
