NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Cece Leone (Sr./Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) scored 15 points and Anna Hughes (So./Glenview, Ill./New Trier) added 13 more, but the Carleton College women’s basketball team lost possession of the President’s Cup trophy after dropping a 73-54 result to rival St. Olaf College.

Entering the crosstown conflict, the Knights (3-13, 0-9 MIAC) had captured the President’s Cup in three of the last four meetings, but with the road win, the Oles (6-10, 3-6 MIAC) brought the trophy back to their side of the Cannon River.

Less than three minutes into the game, St. Olaf first-year guard K’Lynn Lewis drained 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to give her team a 9-4 lead. Lewis would finish with a game-high 19 points to go along with 18 from junior Ella Skrien.

St. Olaf led the whole way thanks in large part to winning the battle on the glass including a 17-board effort from the MIAC’s leading rebounder, forward Makenna Ash. The senior post player also tacked on 10 points en route to recording her ninth double-double of the season.

For the Knights, Leone brought down eight boards and added two blocks and a steal to go along with her scoring total. Hughes added four rebounds, two blocks, and an assist on the game. Meanwhile, Nia Harris (So./Burnsville, Minn./The Blake School) recorded eight points, an assist, and a steal.

Neither team shot better than 35 percent, but St. Olaf pulled down 17 offensive rebounds and finished with a 16-3 edge in second-chance points. The visitors also made more free throws (19) than Carleton attempted (15).

Carleton will host a doubleheader this weekend on Saturday, Jan. 19 with the women set to take on College of Saint Benedict at 1 p.m. and the men tipping off against Saint John’s University at 3 p.m. Live video and stats for both games will be available on Knights Online.
