NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s basketball team held visiting Saint Mary’s University to just 50 points, the lowest point total the Knights have surrendered this season. However, with their two top scorers sidelined due to injury, Carleton struggled offensively, failing to capitalize in the 50-36 setback.

Saint Mary’s (8-2, 5-2 MIAC) scored the first eight points of the contest, but Carleton (2-8, 2-6 MIAC) went on a 14-6 scoring run that knotted the game up with 6:04 remaining in the opening half. The Knights then sank a pair of shots from downtown to keep the game close and trailed by a single point at halftime, 21-20.

However, the absence of scoring leaders Akemi Arzouman (Sr./Irvine, Calif./University) and Skylar Tsutsui (So./Northridge, Calif./Harvard Westlake) – both sidelined with injuries – proved too much for the Knights to overcome in the second period.

Over the opening eight minutes of the second half, Saint Mary’s put together a 13-3 run, and the Cardinals never looked back. Saint Mary’s maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way as the Knights shot just 25 percent from the field on the afternoon.

Gabbi Stienstra (Fy./St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha) led the way for Carleton, scoring nine points, including two shots from beyond the arc. Megan Meads (Jr./Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) tied her career high with five steals and added two assists to the effort.

The Cardinals were led by Jessica Thone and Jamie Stefely, who tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Knights next travel across the Cannon River to play rival St. Olaf College for the President’s Cup on Monday, Jan. 7 at 5:45 p.m. as part of a double-header with the men’s team. Live audio for both games will be available on KDHL 920 AM and Knights Online.
