Knights Drop Lid-Lifter at Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – In her first game action since last December, Emma Purfeerst (Jr./River Falls, Wis./River Falls) tallied a team-high 14 points and added eight rebounds as the Carleton College women’s basketball team dropped its season opener, 70-58, at California Lutheran.

Megan Chavez (Fy./Westminster, Colo./Holy Family) added 12 points in her collegiate debut, and Jenny Ramey (Jr./Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) contributed 12 points, four rebounds, and three steals off the bench.

The Knights (0-1) held an 18-15 lead midway through the first half, but the Regals (2-0) closed the period on a 17-7 run and carried a 32-25 advantage into the break.

The momentum stayed with the hosts during the start of the second half as California Lutheran put together a 17-6 burst that gave the hosts an 18-point lead with 9:20 remaining. Carleton closed to within eight points after Ramey’s steal and layup with under two minutes left, but the Knight comeback ran out of time.

Carleton shot 34.4 percent as a team (21-of-61), including a 7-of-30 (23.3 percent) performance from beyond the arc. The Regals shot 46 percent for the game, including 52 percent in the second half.

“We lacked defensive focus and aggression in the first half and early second half which put us in a position needing to play catch up,” said Carleton head coach Cassie Kosiba. “With that said, I was encouraged by our fight to come back late in the game.”

Akemi Arzouman (Sr./Irvine, Calif./University) corralled nine rebounds to lead Carleton.

Channing Fleischmann scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Regals. Rachel Heagy added 16 points, and Erica Whitley chipped in 14 points and nine boards.

The Knights will face Chapman University (Calif.) on Saturday, Nov. 24.
