Auggies Hold Off Knights’ Rally

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Jenny Ramey (Sr./Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) recorded her fourth career game with 20-plus points and Emma Purfeerst (Sr./River Falls, Wis./River Falls) contributed her 15th career double-double, but the short-handed Carleton College women’s basketball team lost 57-47 to visiting Augsburg College on Wednesday night.

Due to injuries to three starters, the Knights (5-19, 3-18 MIAC) had only six players available yet managed to threaten the Auggies (12-12, 9-12 MIAC) during the second half.

After a back-and-forth opening six minutes, Augsburg used a 13-2 run spanning eight minutes to build a double-digit lead. Ramey drained a three pointer as the first half expired to pull the hosts within 32-25 at the break.

Momentum from that basket carried over after intermission as Carleton kept chipping away at the deficit. Ramey had nine points during the Knights’ 14-3 run that pushed the home team in front, 36-35, with 12:53 still to play.

Augsburg’s Ashley Anfinson answered with three of her team-best 18 points to stop the Carleton surge and ignite the Auggies on a 19-4 burst that put the game out of reach. Jenna Orth also used that spurt to work towards here double-double, totaling 14 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five assists.

Ramey finished with 20 points and a career-best nine rebounds, while Purfeerst tallied 10 points, 10 rebounds, and a career-high tying three blocks. Gabbi Stienstra (So./St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha) chipped in 14 points. Jessica Huang (Sr./Millbrae, Calif./Taipei American School) notched the other three points. All four scorers registered at least 38 minutes of action, with Ramey and Purfeerst playing the entire contest.

“I am really proud of the effort tonight,” said Carleton head coach Cassie Kosiba. “We were able to get the shots we wanted in the second half, we just needed a few more to fall.”

The Knights wrap up the season with a Senior Day doubleheader against Macalester College on Saturday, Feb. 22. The women take the court at 1 p.m. followed by the men at 3 p.m. Live video for both games will be available via Knights Online.
