Stienstra’s Big Game Can’t Rescue Short-Handed Knights

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Gabbi Stienstra (So./St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha) tallied a season-best 17 points to lead all scorers as the Carleton College women’s basketball team lost, 72-50, at College of Saint Benedict.

After trailing by double digits in the first half, Carleton (5-18, 3-17 MIAC) knotted the score at 33-33 shortly after intermission. Already playing minus two starters for the last seven games, the Knights lost another when Michele Arima (So./Valencia, Calif./West Ranch) went down with an ankle injury five minutes into the second half.

That departure came at the beginning of a 17-2 run by Saint Benedict (12-11, 9-11 MIAC) that allowed the Blazers to seize control of the contest.

“We got away from doing the little things today,” said Carleton head coach Cassie Kosiba, “and St. Bens was able to take advantage. Just as we were getting back to playing team defense and were sharing the ball offensively, Michele went down, leaving us even more short handed.”

Jenny Ramey (Sr./Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) added 11 points for the Knights, who got a 10-rebound effort from forward Emma Purfeerst (Sr./River Falls, Wis./River Falls).

Morgan Dale notched a double-double for the Blazers, finishing with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Tish Alexnader contributed 11 points in only 14 minutes of action. Carleton, which leads the MIAC in three-point shooting this season, saw what it is like on the other side as Saint Benedict made 11 triples in the game, including three each by Dale and Alexander.

“We'll take a much needed day off tomorrow, then start preparing for an aggressive and physical Augsburg team,” Kosiba said.

Carleton hosts the Auggies on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. Live video and stats will be available via Knights Online.
