NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s basketball team could not keep pace with No. 21-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College as the Knights dropped a 72-48 decision on Wednesday. Katie Chavez (So./Westminster, Colo./Holy Family) and Nia Harris (Fy./Burnsville, Minn./The Blake School) had 13 points apiece to lead Carleton, which dropped consecutive games for the first time this season.
The Gusties (10-2, 4-1 MIAC) looked like a top-25 squad as they shot at least 43 percent in each quarter and finished at 51 percent overall for the contest. Meanwhile, the Knights (5-6, 2-3 MIAC) committed 28 turnovers and connected at just a 33 percent rate overall. Gustavus enjoyed a 30-7 advantage in points off turnovers and posted a 44-22 edge in points in the paint.
Each period followed a similar trend as Gustavus started with a run, and Carleton tried to respond. The Gusties opened the contest by jumping out to a 15-4 lead. They then began the second quarter with a 13-4 run, the third stanza with a 15-4 spurt, and the final period with a 15-6 run.
Miranda Rice paced a trio of visitors in double figures with a game-high 17 points.
The Knights will face another stiff challenge on Saturday, Jan. 6 when Carleton visits No. 16-ranked University of St. Thomas for a 3 p.m. affair. Live audio can be heard on KDHL 920 AM in the Northfield/Faribault area and worldwide via Knights Online.
