NORTHFIELD, Minn. – In its second game of the 2019 portion of the season, the Carleton College women’s basketball team absorbed a 73-43 loss to visiting Gustavus Adolphus College.

The offense for both teams started slowly. The Gusties (7-6, 4-2 MIAC) trailed 6-4 midway through the opening quarter but put together a 12-0 run to move in front to stay. Carleton (3-9, 0-6 MIAC) pulled to within 22-16 with 7:16 left before halftime, but the visitors used a 14-2 spurt to seize control of the contest.

Carleton was unable to close the gap against a Gustavus program that went to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen a year ago and was picked second in the MIAC coaches’ preseason poll.

Paige Richert tallied a game-high 17 points for the visitors, while Justin Lee and Maddie Wagner added 10 points apiece. Gustavus collected 14 steals in the game, helping offset a 5-for-21 shooting performance (24 percent) from three-point range.

Carleton rookie Annabella Jensen (Salt Lake City, Utah/Hillcrest) nearly corralled her third career double-double performance with a team-high 10 points while also pulling down nine rebounds and grabbing three steals. Meanwhile, Anna Hughes (So./Glenview, Ill./New Trier) filled up the stat sheet with a five-point, seven-rebound, three-block, and two-steal game.

The Knights lead the MIAC in blocked shots and rejected seven more shots in this one. They also out-rebounded Gustavus.

Carleton plays its next game on the road when the Knights face St. Mary’s University on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. Links to live stats and video will be available via Knights Online.
