WINONA, Minn. – Despite out-shooting and out-rebounding their opposition, the Carleton College women’s basketball team dropped a 53-48 decision at Saint Mary’s University on Wednesday evening. Annabella Jensen (Fy./Salt Lake City, Utah/Hillcrest) led the way for the Knights offensively with 17 points, eight rebounds and one steal.

Carleton (3-11, 0-7 MIAC) held Saint Mary’s (8-6, 4-3 MIAC) to 28 percent shooting overall including a 4-for-26 (15 percent) performance from behind the arc. The Knights also greatly outperformed one of the conference’s best rebounding teams, nabbing 50 boards compared to 35 from the Cardinals.

Despite all of their success hitting shots and grabbing boards, the Knights committed 24 turnovers, which the Cardinals turned into 19 points. By comparison, Saint Mary’s gave the ball away only nine times.

A 3-pointer by Anna Hughes (So./Glenview, Ill./New Trier) on the opening possession gave the Knights their only lead of the contest. From there, the Cardinals led the rest of the way, but the visitors were able to keep things close down the stretch.

Saint Mary’s built a 44-31 lead with 7:12 left to play in the fourth quarter, but a 14-4 Knights’ run over the ensuing four minutes quickly trimmed the Cardinals’ lead down to three points. Five different players scored for Carleton during that run.

Despite cutting the score to 48-45 with 2:36 remaining, the Knights were unable to close out the game and fell 53-48 to the Cardinals.

Saint Mary’s was led by All-Region forward Brandi Blattner, who finished one board shy of a double-double with a game highs of 19 points and nine rebounds. Brooklyn Paulson was the second Cardinal to score in double figures as she poured in 11 points and nabbed two steals on the game.

Hughes finished the game with six points, four rebounds, and one block. Cece Leone (Sr./Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) finished with another double-digit scoring night as she contributed 11 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Meanwhile, Jill Yanai (Fy./Glendale, Calif./Glendale) had another successful statistical evening, accounting for eight points, six assists, and four rebounds.

The Knights will travel to Hamline University this Saturday, Jan. 12 to take on the Pipers in a doubleheader at the Hutton Area. The women’s tipoff is slated for 1 p.m., and links to live video/audio/stats will be available via Knights Online.
