Knights Pull Away from St. Kate's for First Win

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Paced by Akemi Arzouman’s (Sr./Irvine, Calif./University) 17-point effort off the bench, the Carleton College women’s basketball team notched its first victory of the campaign, prevailing 75-62 at St. Catherine University in the MIAC opener for both squads. The Knights used a balanced attack with seven players tallying at least eight points.

“Defensively I liked our defensive intensity during the second half, which resulted in steals and forced turnovers,” said Carleton head coach Cassie Kosiba. “This was a good team win, largely due to important contributions from the bench.”

To say that the Carleton reserves were the difference would be an understatement. The Knight non-starters outscored their counterparts by a whopping 45-2 margin.

Neither team could seize control until Carleton took over down the stretch. With the Knights clinging to a 53-52 lead with 7:30 remaining, Chessy Cantrell (Fy./Owasso, Okla./Owasso) knocked down a three pointer, sparking Carleton on a game-clinching 13-2 run over the next four minutes.

The Knights made their free throws down the stretch and won their fourth straight versus the Wildcats.

Megan Chavez (Fy./Westminster, Colo./Holy Family) had 11 points, while Jenny Ramey (Jr./Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) contributed nine points, five steals, five assists and four rebounds.

Jessa Youso (Sr./Virginia, Minn./Virginia) and Cantrell added nine points each off the Carleton bench, with Emma Purfeerst (Jr./River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and Michele Arima (Fy./Valencia, Calif./West Ranch) chipping in eight points apiece.

Sarina Baker had a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds in her season debut. Sarah Mong poured in 14 of her game-high 20 points in the first half to help St. Kate’s keep pace early.

Carleton hosts Bethel University on Saturday, Dec. 1 for the Knights’ home opener. Tipoff for the women’s-men’s doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. Live stats and live video—including a high definition feed—will be available via Knights Online.
