NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Akemi Arzouman (Sr./Irvine, Calif./University) became Carleton College’s newest member of the 1,000-point club as she poured in 13 points to lead the Knights (2-2, 2-0 MIAC) to a 60-57 come-from-behind victory over Bethel University. She became the 12th member of the 1000-point club, scoring 9 of her 13 points in the second half as the hosts erased a seven-point deficit.

The victory keeps the Knights in a five-way tie atop the conference standings. Carleton has already equaled its MIAC victory total from a year ago.

The Knights struggled offensively, shooting just 25 percent in the first half and 38 percent overall. However, Carleton once again won the turnover battle, providing extra offensive opportunities.

“Our defense kept us in it today while our offense tried to work itself out,” said Carleton head coach Cassie Kosiba. “I was very pleased by the effort by all defensively.”

The Knights trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half and faced a 26-20 deficit at the break as Bethel (0-3, 0-2 MIAC) shot 48 percent from the floor. The Carleton defense stiffened after intermission, limiting the Royals to only 33 percent shooting in the second half.

The visitors still led 36-29 with 11:30 remaining in regulation, but the Knights responded with a 9-0 burst over the next three minutes, including a big three pointer by Arzouman. That was part of a larger 25-7 Carleton burst that turned the seven-point deficit into an 11-point advantage.

Arzouman’s milestone point came on a drive to the hoop with 4:10 remaining. She became the 33rd Carleton basketball player overall—and 12th female—to secure membership in the 1,000-point club. She has averaged 12.67 points per game over her career.

“It was a great day for Carleton women's basketball,” said Kosiba. “To top it off we welcomed Akemi Arzouman into the record books. She's worked hard for this day, and I'm glad her teammates could help make it a memorable one.”
