Knights Stumble at St. Ben's to Suffer First Conference Setback

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Emma Purfeerst (Jr./River Falls, Wis./River Falls) recorded her 10th career double-double, but trouble on the boards and turnovers doomed the Knights as the Carleton College women’s basketball team (2-3, 2-1 MIAC) absorbed its first conference loss of the season, falling 65-53 at College of Saint Benedict.

The Carleton defense held the St. Ben’s shooters to under 37 percent from the field and 29 percent from beyond the arc. “I thought we executed our game plan defensively tonight very well, with one exception – rebounding,” said Carleton head coach Cassie Kosiba.

“Their offensive boards and our turnovers combined allowed too many extra opportunities.” The Blazers pulled down 20 offensive rebounds and scored 20 points off 20 Carleton turnovers.

Saint Benedict jumped out to a 17-5 lead midway through the first half. Consecutive three pointers by Akemi Arzouman (Sr./Irvine, Calif./University) and Gabbi Stienstra (Fy./St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha) sliced the deficit in half a minute later.

A Purfeerst jumper brought Carleton within 23-19 with 2:42 still to play in the first half, but that would be as close as Carleton got on this evening.

Purfeerst was 4-of-5 from the floor and 6-of-7 at the charity stripe en route to her second double-double of the season. Skylar Tsutsui (So./Northridge, Calif./Harvard Westlake) returned to the Carleton lineup action after missing three games due to injury and scored 13 points. That duo combined to go 8-of-12 from the field, while the rest of the roster managed just a 7-of-31 performance.

Brianna Barrett had 16 points to lead a trio of Blazers in double figures.
