Knights End 2012 With Loss in Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Carleton College women’s basketball team fell short at Coe College, 70-59, closing the 2012 portion of the Knights’ schedule. The game featured several big runs by both squads but was decided by a late 15-0 burst by the hosts.Skylar Tsutsui (So./Northridge, Calif./Harvard Westlake) paced the Knights with a season-best 16 points.

While Carleton (2-6) won the turnover battle, the Kohawks (5-3) turned in a hot shooting performance, connecting on 55 percent of their field-goal attempts compared to 38 percent for the Knights.

Carleton raced out to a 19-7 lead midway through the first half, but Coe responded with a 15-2 run over the next five minutes and eventually carried a slim 31-29 lead into intermission.

After Tsutsui knotted the score with a close-range jumper on the first possession of the second half, Coe promptly answered with an 8-0 burst over the next two minutes. The Knights responded immediately with a 12-0 run of their own, a spurt that spanned only 2:20. Emma Purfeerst (Jr./River Falls, Wis./River Falls) was responsible for seven of those points as the Knights moved in front 43-39.

Gabbi Stienstra’s (Fy./St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha) three-pointer gave Carleton a five-point lead with 9:02 left in regulation, but the game’s final big burst came from the Kohawks, as a 15-0 run over the next five-and-a-half minutes put the game out of reach.

Purfeerst finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Jenny Ramey (Jr./Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) added 14 points and a season-best six steals.

Kayla Waskow paced the Kohawks with 23 points and 12 rebounds—both game highs—for her ninth career double-double.

The Knights will now step away from competition until 2013, when Carleton will host No. 4 University of St. Thomas on Jan. 2, 2013. Knights Online will once again feature live video, including a high definition feed.
