NORTHFIELD, Minn. – It’s not how you start; it’s how you finish.

That adage was proved false during Monday’s contest between the women’s basketball teams from cross-town rivals Carleton College and St. Olaf College. While the Knights played even with their counterparts from across town during the second half, early struggles putting the ball in the basket resulted in Carleton absorbing a 62-43 road loss.

The Knights (2-9, 2-6 MIAC) once again played very solid defensively, limiting the Oles (5-6, 3-5 MIAC) to just 29 percent shooting in the contest and forcing 17 turnovers. For the second straight game, however, the absence of the squad’s top two scorers from a year ago—senior Akemi Arzouman (Irvine, Calif./University) and sophomore Skylar Tsutsui (So./Northridge, Calif./Harvard Westlake)—factored into tough times at the offensive end, especially against the much taller St. Olaf lineup.

The Oles opened the game on a 15-5 run over the first six minutes of play and held a double-digit lead through the remainder of the contest and retained possession of the President's Cup.

Carleton guard Megan Chavez (Fy./Westminster, Colo./Holy Family) scored all her team-high 12 points from beyond the arc. Gabbi Stienstra (Fy./St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha) contributed 10 points and three rebounds, and Jessa Youso (Sr./Virginia, Minn./Virginia) added a 10-point performance off the bench.

St. Olaf was led by Mackenzie Wolter, who scored 15 points and became the fifth Ole to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Elise Raney and Nikki Frogner added 13 and 11 points, respectively, to the Ole effort.

Carleton will look to get back on track when the Knights host Augsburg College on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available through Knights Online.
