SIOUX FALLS, S.D.— The No. 21-ranked Carleton College cross country team raced to a fifth-place finish at the season-opening Augustana Twilight on Friday. The 30-team field included four Division I programs and eight D-II squads. The starting gun went off at 8:30 p.m. as the meet was held under the lights at Yankton Trail Park.

“We are very pleased with this first meet,” said Carleton head coach Donna Ricks. “We got solid performances by the returners and the newcomers.”

Emily Kaegi (Sr./Williamstown, Mass./Mount Greylock) and Meg Mathison (So./Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) paced the Knights and worked together for the entire race. Mathison, running her first cross country race ever—as she did not compete in high school or last fall—finished 12th overall out of 310 competitors with a time of 18:13.78 on the five-kilometer course. Kaegi crossed the line 14th with a time of 18:16.12, making Carleton one of only three squads to notch a pair of top-15 results.

The Knights’ seven-runner contingent included three first-years, with Amanda Mosborg (Fy./Edina, Minn./Edina) leading the trio. She placed 42nd with a time of 19:01.05. Yoshiko Lynch (Fy./Littleton, Colo./Philips Exeter) took 80th at 19:33.01, while Grace Leslie (Fy./Orono, Minn./Orono) clocked a time of 20:07.12 to finished 119th.

Sam Schnirring (Jr./Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and Helen Schuda (So./Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) posted personal-best times at this distance as they finished in 19:23.04 and 19:23.23, respectively, to hold down 69th and 70th places.

South Dakota, a regionally-ranked D-I program, claimed the team title with 24 points, followed by Creighton (55 points), Nebraska (92) and Winona State (144). Carleton edged Minnesota State (183) for fifth.

Carleton will next race on Friday, Sept. 8 at the UW-River Falls Falcon Invite.
