EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - Despite top-10 finishes from sophomores Emma Greenlee (Aurora, Minn./Mesabi East) and Amanda Mosborg (Edina, Minn.), the Carleton College women’s cross country team was narrowly edged out for first place by host UW-Eau Claire at the Blugold Invitational.

Running on their home course at Whitetail Golf Course, the No. 10-ranked Blugolds totaled 80 points in the event, while No. 8 Carleton barely missed out on the team title with 82 points. A total of 25 teams competed in the cool conditions. No. 17 Wheaton (Ill.) finished third overall at 99 points, while No. 29 St. Olaf edged No. 27 North Central (Ill.) for fourth place by a 154-156 margin.

“This course fit our team well, said Carleton head coach Donna Ricks. “The workouts that we have implemented this past month were perfect as our team was both physically and mentally ready for the challenge. We knew we raced well, and that it was going to be very close. We went stride for stride with UW-Eau Claire, and in the end two points separated our teams.

“The team ran smart; they did a great job of working together, and in return they pulled each other to strong races and achieved many personal bests or season-best performances.”

Race champion Sam Slattery of UWEC clocked a time of 22:06.8, and Greenlee crossing the finish line in second place—out of 335 runners—only three seconds later. Mosberg was not far behind and ended with a time of 22:17.4, good for seventh place overall.

Helen Schuda (Jr./Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) was the third Knight in the chute, finishing in 22:36.0 to capture 13th place. Next in for Carleton was senior Sarah Nazarino (Seattle, Wash./Garfield), who crossed the end line with a time of 23:03.3, good for 25th place. Samantha Schnirring (Sr./Eden Prairie, Minn.) rounded out the scoring for the Knights with a 35th-place result (23:18.8).

Finishing in sixth and seventh for the Knights were juniors Ruthie Boyd (Breckenridge, Colo./Summit) and Marietta Geist (Crookston, Minn), who finished in 39th and 50th places with times of 23:22.9 and 23:36.0, respectively.

The Knights’ next scheduled competition is slated for Saturday, Oct. 13 when the team gets a look at the course used for the 2018 NCAA Championships. The Knights will race at the UW-Oshkosh Kollege Town Sports Invitational.
