TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Carleton College women’s cross country team—which entered the national meet ranked No. 28 in the country—placed 17th at the NCAA Division III Championships held at the LaVern Gibson Course. Ruth Steinke (Fy./Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) paced the Knights, placing 47th in a field of 277 racers with a time of 22:14.8.

This is the second consecutive year that the Knights qualified for the national meet as one of the 32 team entries and the eighth time in the last decade. Overall, Carleton has advanced to the NCAA Championships 13 times.

“We had a really young team race today, with three first-years and two sophomores,” said Carleton head coach Donna Ricks “It’s exciting for the future with how young this team is and for them to get here and get this experience. They did a really good job and feel pretty good overall with how they raced.”

Shira Kaufman (Fy./Leverett, Mass./Amherst Regional) was next to finish for the Knights, placing 82nd as she traversed the six-kilometer course in 22:37.9.

The third of Carleton’s dynamic rookies, Sally Donovan (Minneapolis, Minn./South), crossed the line at 22:51.8, which ranked 110th.

Johns Hopkins University won its first team title with 158 points. The Central Region fared well as Wartburg College was second overall with 221 points, St. Olaf College ranked eighth with 309 points, Luther College was 14th (352) followed by Carleton and Gustavus Adolphus College (21st, 465 points). Christy Cazzola of UW-Oshkosh was the individual champion.

Rounding out the scoring for Carleton were sophomores Colette Celichowski (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) and Ahna Weeks (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill), who finished 155th (23:09.5) and 193rd (23:26.7), respectively.

Haley Johnson (Sr./Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper) and Aly Wisekal (Jr./East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) were the other two participants for the Knights, placing 218th (23:40.4) and 246th (24:02.0).

“The team ran a great structure all the way through once again,” said Ricks. “As the race went along, we progressed and continued to move up.”
