Wang, Sakamoto power Knights to third straight victory

Ziyi Wang
Ziyi Wang notched her 12th career top-five finish.

LAKE CITY, Minn.--Juniors Ziyi Wang (Beijing City, China/Lighthouse Christian Academy) and Ayumi Sakamoto (Honolulu/finished second and third, respectively, as Carleton won its own D3 Classic event by 14 shots.

Wang matched her career low with an even-par 72 on Saturday, and battled to a 79 on Sunday to end at 151. It marked her second runner-up finish in three tournaments this season. Sakamoto was solid all weekend, posting rounds of 76-76--152 for her seventh career top-five finish in 21 tournaments.

The Knights shot consecutive rounds of 313, outdistancing St. Thomas (640), UW-Stout (641) and St. Benedict (645). St. Catherine (652) rounded out the top five.

The win, the third straight to open the fall season and sixth straight regular-season triumph dating back to last spring for the Knights, wasn't without its challenges. The Knights led by only two shots entering Sunday's final round, as UW-Stout and St. Benedict shot 315. Carleton, though, opened play on Sunday by playing the first six holes in a combined seven-over par, stretching its lead to double digits. While the  Knights struggled a bit to pull away from the field in the middle of the round, the four scoring players toured the last three holes in one-under par, sealing the win.

Abby Euyang (Fy./Seattle/Lakeside) had her best day as a Knight, making birdies on the final two holes to end Sunday's round at six-over par 78 and finish in a tie for 10th at 158.

"While we didn't play our best golf this weekend, we did a wonderful job of minimizing our mistakes and played smart golf," Carleton head coach Eric Sieger said. "Ayumi was a rock, Ziyi was great and to have Abby step up and contribute is a positive sign for us moving forward." The Knights' four scoring players had seven scores of double bogey or worse on Saturday, but only two on Sunday.

Alexis Chan (Fy./Highlands Ranch, Colo./Rock Canyon) barely missed her second top-10 finish of the season after rounds of 76-83--159, finishing T12 to lead Carleton's "B" squad. They finished 14th at 724, ahead of a couple of MIAC teams.

The Knights are back in action next Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 23-24, hosting the College City Challenge at Bellwood Oaks Golf Course in Hastings, Minn.
