HASTINGS, Minn.—Ayumi Sakamoto (Jr./Honolulu/’Iolani School) and Ziyi Wang (Jr./Beijing City, China/Lighthouse Christian Academy) both tied for third place and Carleton fired tournament records of 305 (first round) and 620 (total) in capturing their fourth tournament title of the fall season.

Carleton, which has won all four of its events this fall, left little doubt as to the outcome on Sunday. The Knights’ 305 first round was highlighted by Sakamoto shooting 74, Abby Euyang (Fy./Seattle/Lakeside) tallying a career-low 75 and Wang and Alyssa Akiyama (So./Cincinnati/Seven Hills) matching 78s. That left Carleton in the lead by eight shots.

On Sunday, the Knights got off to a hot start by their top three players. Sakamoto turned in one-over par, highlighted by a 25-foot birdie putt on the third hole. She reached the par-5 tenth hole in two, actually going over the green before a nifty up-and-down moved her back to even par. She made a couple of bogeys before a rough finish cost her a shot at her first individual title.

Wang got off to an even hotter start, birdieing two of her first three holes. She eventually turned in one-over par and made only one more bogey coming home to finish at two-over par 75. Akiyama, meanwhile, made a four on nine of her first 10 holes, also birdied the 10th hole to get to one-over par, eventually finishing at four-over 77.

Wang’s final-round 75 matched the low round of the day, and coupled with Akiyama and Sakamoto’s round, the Knights posted the low round of the day to extend their eight-shot lead to a 25-shot margin by the end of the day.

“We had been waiting for that low round, and it finally arrived on Saturday,” Carleton head coach Eric Sieger said. “I thought all weekend we played solid and really did a nice job of avoiding mistakes. We made a few more putts on Saturday, but overall it was a really solid weekend.”

Besides Sakamoto and Wang inside the top 10, Akiyama ended seventh, Euyang ninth and Alexis Chan (Fy./Highlands Ranch, Colo./Rock Canyon) just missed the top 10 in 13th at 164.

Carleton’s “B” team, paced by Haley Grable (So./Watkinsville, Ga./North Oconee)  at 170, highlighted by a first-round 82. Andie Nakahira (Fy./Torrance, Calif./Vistamar School) added a career-best 87 on Sunday. The Knights finished ahead of two MIAC squads.

The Knights will now point towards the MIAC Championships on Oct. 7-9 at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Minn. The Knights have finished in the top two at the last five conference championships and are seeking their first title since 2014.
