SARTELL, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s golf team opened the 2018-19 campaign by running away with the title at the 13-squad CSB Invitational. The Knights fired consecutive sub-300 rounds and broke the program 36-hole scoring record by eight strokes. Ziyi Wang (Sr./Beijing City, China/Lighthouse Christian Academy) captured medalist honors by three shots.

Carleton easily out-distanced runner-up Gustavus Adolphus, who finished 37 shots back.

The Knights fired a 9-over par 297 in Saturday’s opening round, the second-best 18-hole score in program history. Carleton followed that up with an 11-over 299—now tied for the third-best single-round score in team annals—on Sunay to finish with a total of 596 shots, eclipsing the previous standard of 604 established at the Wartburg Fall Invitational on Sept. 6-7, 2014.

"I could not have asked for a better start to the season," said Carleton head coach Molly Erickson. "For this team to come out and put two sub-300 rounds on the board is so impressive.

"They are probably sick of me saying this already, but I'm so incredibly proud of every single one of them."

Wang and Ayumi Sakamoto (Sr./Honolulu, Hawaii/ʻIolani School) carded identical 1-over par 73’s in the first round, and Wang (+1, 73-72=145) tallied a career best-tying 72 shots in the final round to finish three strokes clear of Sakamoto (+4, 73-75=148).

Sunday marked the fifth time Wang has played a collegiate round at even par; her winning score of 145 is tied for second best in team history. Meanwhile, Sakamoto’s 148 was also a career best and tied her for sixth-place in recorded program history.

Alyssa Akiyama (Jr./Terrace Park, Ohio/Seven Hills School) finished fourth overall (+8, 74-78=152), while Alexis Chan (So./Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon)—who played the tournament as an individual—rounded out the top-five. Sunday saw the best round of Chan’s (+9, 79+74=153) collegiate career.

Newcomer Kristin Miyagi (Fy./Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School) tied for sixth place after posting identical 77’s, and Abby Euyang (So./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) improved upon an opening-round 80 with a 75 on Sunday to finish 11-over par, tied for eighth place.

Ananya Shah (Fy./Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata) also played as an individual, posting scores of 88 and 89 in the first tournament of her collegiate career.

Carleton has now won 12 consecutive regular season tournaments, dating back to April 15, 2017. The only times over this span that the Knights did not finish atop the leaderboard was a pair of top-7 results at the NCAA Championships.

The Knights will put that streak on the line next weekend when they travel to Waverly, Iowa for the Wartburg Fall Invitational.
