BELGRADE, Minn.––Kelsey Moede (So./Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Taylor Wells (So./Rochester, Minn./Century) fired seven-over par 79s to finish in a tie for fourth as Carleton College wrapped its 2012-13 regular-season schedule at the Gustavus Quadrangular.

Grace Gilmore (Fy./Edina, Minn.) added an 82, just missing a top-10 finish, as the Knights posted a 333 team score to finish fourth in the event. Mara Daly (Fy./St. Louis Park, Minn.) overcame a triple bogey on the front nine and a finishing quadruple bogey to still post her best round of the spring at 93.

“Overall it was a solid day for us,” Carleton head coach Eric Sieger said. “I know all the gals felt like they left a few shots out there, but again I was very pleased with the effort and approach we took today.”

Host Gustavus, ranked 15th in the latest Golf World/WGCA Coaches poll, won the event at 319, outdistancing No. 10 St. Olaf at 322. The Oles were playing without two starters as they prepare for the national tournament in a week’s time. St. Olaf garnered the MIAC’s automatic bid to NCAAs by beating Carleton by 10 shots at this fall’s conference tournament. No. 21 St. Thomas was third, followed by No. 23 Carleton.

The event, originally a two-day, 36-hole event, was turned into an 18-hole, single-day event by poor weather conditions on Saturday.

The Knights, who struggled a bit during the spring season, are likely on the outside looking in for an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. Moede, though, is solidly in the mix for one of the six individual bids to the national tournament.

“It will be an anxious next 24 hours while we wait to hear,” Sieger said. “Obviously, we feel like she is deserving and that the schedule we’ve played, the competition we’ve faced, and the scores she’s posted are enough to get her into the field.”

The NCAA Championship selections will be posted on tomorrow afternoon or evening.
