SARTELL, Minn.—Ziyi Wang (Jr./Beijing, China/Lighthouse Christian Academy) finished at 10-over par 154 as Carleton College opened the season with back-to-back 318s to win the CSB Invitational by 16 strokes.

Wang, who rode a five-birdie performance in a first round, one-over par 73, faded a bit in Sunday’s second round with an 81. She finished six shots back of Bethel’s Christine Piwnica, who fired a two-under par 70 in the final round to rally from a five-shot deficit.

The Knights, who notched five victories last season including their last three regular-season events, posted the low round each day en route to head coach Eric Sieger’s 25th career invitational victory. Their 636 team score outpaced St. Catherine (652), Gustavus (655) and St. Thomas (655). Bethel rounded out the top five at 661. It marked the second straight year Carleton has won the event at Blackberry Ridge Golf Club.

Alyssa Akiyama (So./Terrace Park, Ohio/Seven Hills School) ended T5th after rounds of 80-77—157, while Alexis Chan (Fy./Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon) finished inside the top 10 in her collegiate debut at 158 playing as an individual. Ayumi Sakamoto (Jr./Honolulu/’Iolani) rebounded from an 85 opening round with a 77 on Sunday to move up 13 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 14th.

“Overall it wasn’t our best performance, but I thought we did a better job of grinding on Sunday in windy, difficult conditions,” Sieger said. “We need to do a better job of setting our playing focus and then placing our intention in those areas. We also need to putt much better.”

The Knights return to action at the Wartburg Invitational next weekend, an event Carleton has won twice in the last three years.
