Trio Inside Top 10, Knights Second After MIAC Championships Round One

Coon Rapids, Minn.--Traci Johnson (Jr./Lakeville, Minn./North) fired a season-low 10-over par 82 and Meghan Gajare (Sr./Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Central/Kalamazoo Area Math and Science Center) added her best round of the season as well with an 85, while Laura Knutson (Sr./Edina, Minn.) tallied an 84 as all three players are inside the top 10, pushing Carleton to second place after the MIAC Championships first round.

The Knights' team score of 343 is four shots clear of St. Benedict and St. Olaf but 16 back of leader Gustavus Adolphus.

"It was a really good start for us today, and I was really encouraged that our fourth and fifth players came through for us with two great scores," Carleton head coach Eric Sieger said, who watched his team post its third-best score in program history at the conference championships. "Traci and Meghan really came through for us today and showed why the depth in our line-up is such a strength for this team."

Johnson's round is tied for seventh-lowest in program history at the conference tournament and leaves her only two shots back of second. Knutson is two shots back in eighth and Gajare is tied for ninth.

"The exciting part is that I think we feel like we can play even better," Sieger said. "I'm pretty confident we'll get two good scores out of a couple of players that struggled a little today."

The Knights and the rest of the nine conference teams are back in action in Sunday's second round, with Carleton starting at 12:48 p.m. at Bunker Hills Golf Club. The 54-hole event concludes on Monday.
