The official start of the 2008-09 season, the 11th in the history of Carleton women's golf, is tomorrow morning when our team gathers for our first official practice of the season. We head into the season much more experienced than a year ago and excited to see where the journey of the upcoming season takes us.
When we headed into the start of last season, we had only two players, Katrina Wood '09 and Sarah Ingebristen '08, that had any college golf experience. We started three newcomers in Laura Knutson '11, Louise Buckler '11 and Meghan Gajare '11. This year, though, we have four players back with experience and we fully expect to pick up where we left off at the end of the 2007-08. Hopefully the ladies have been working hard on their games over the summer and will come in sharp and ready to go.
We also have two first-year players joining us this year in Traci Johnson from Lakeville, Minn., and Kate Johnson from Wauwatosa, Wis. We were able to meet them and their families tonight at our annual preseason opening dinner. Traci helped her team, Lakeville North HS, qualify for the state tournament last year and she also won the Northfield Golf Club women's club championship this summer. Kate, meanwhile, is the niece of former Carleton football standout Todd Nickodym, and we're excited to see what both players bring to our squad this year and I think they'll be a great fit for our program.
We'll continue to blog throughout the preseason and the competitive season as well, and later this week we'll take a in-depth look at our team and post our season preview on the women's golf website.
