MINNEAPOLIS -- The Carleton College women’s soccer team traveled to Augsburg University and fell 2-0 to the MIAC co-leaders. In addition to the tough competition, both teams had to deal with steady rain throughout the game and a lightning delay which ensured that the contest did not wrap up until close to 10:30 p.m.

The Knights (5-5-3, 1-4-3 MIAC) finished with seven shots on goal compared to only four for the Auggies (10-3-1, 6-1-1 MIAC), but it was the home team that capitalized its chances and came away with the win.

MIAC goal leader Ashley St. Aubin opened the scoring in the 41st minute with a blast from the top left of the box to the bottom right of the net. She also played a part in Augsburg’s second goal when her shot hit the post in the 56th minute. The ball pin-balled off the post; hit a defender's knee; bounced off the head of Kaelie Espinda Banick, who had slid into the goal attempting to follow up the initial shot; rebounded off the defender again; and finally came to rest in the net.

Annika Martensson (Jr./Wauwatosa, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) led Carleton offensively with three shots, including two on goal. Anna Roethler (Fy./St Louis Park, Minn./St Louis Park) added two saves for the Knights from the net.

The loss puts the Carleton’s back to the wall as the team is currently seven points out of the sixth and final playoff spot in the MIAC with three conference matches remaining. The Knights must win all three matches and get help elsewhere in the standings to advance to the postseason.

First, however, Carleton returns home to take on No. 21-ranked UW-La Crosse in a non-conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 3:30 p.m. Knights Online will provide live video and stats of that contest.
