NORTHFIELD, Minn. – On a sweltering day, the nationally-ranked Carleton College women’s soccer squad continued its hot start by knocking off Hamline University, 2-0, in the Knights’ first MIAC game of the year.

Building off their first appearance in the United Soccer Coaches Association national rankings since 2011, the No. 24-ranked Knights (4-0-1, 1-0-0 MIAC) were led by a goal and an assist from senior Ruby Kazemi (Missoula, Mont./Hellgate). Mackenzie Korpi’s (Jr./Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook) first career goal accounted for Carleton’s other tally.

Carleton finished the day with an 18-4 edge in shot attempts. Sophomore goalkeepers Anna Roethler (St Louis Park, Minn./St Louis Park) and Lilly Danna (Los Angeles, Calif./Los Angeles CES) combined to post Carleton’s fourth straight shutout.

Kazemi started the scoring in the ninth minute when a failed Hamline (3-3-1, 1-1-0 MIAC) clearance led to a quick Carleton attack. Libby Franchot (So./Minneapolis, Minn./Blake School) collected the loose ball and worked for a shot that was deflected by the Piper defense. The ball fell to Emma Wasend (Jr./Denver, Colo./George Washington), who slotted a pass back across the top of the 18-yard box. Kazemi’s one-timer sailed into the left side of the net.

In the 34th minute the Pipers defense struggled to clear the ball again, Kazemi took advantage. After intercepting the ball, she found Korpi crashing down the right wing for a close-range blast to wrap-up the scoring.

The Knights will have a short turn-around, playing again on Sunday, Sept. 16 at Warburg College. A link to live video and live stats of will be available via Knights Online
