NORTHFIELD, Minn. – In a matchup between two longtime rivals, the Carleton College women’s soccer team knocked off Macalester College by a score of 4-1. Hannah Hemmerly (Sr./Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Friends) and Hailey Mair (Sr./Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) each had a goal and an assist for the Knights, who out-shot the Scots by a 20-7 margin.

Carleton (5-1-2, 2-0-1 MIAC) took over sole possession atop the MIAC standings by dominating possession for long periods of time against a Macalester (1-4-1, 0-2-1 MIAC) squad still searching for its first conference win.

“Today’s match was special for our seniors, who only have had one previous result, a draw, versus Macalester,” said Carleton head coach Jocelyn Keller. “Their win was well deserved, and we were able to execute what we trained after the Gustavus match, a good sign. Our returners remained focused and committed even after two disappointing results. We played nice soccer, supported one another from the sidelines and pitch today, and as a result we had four difficult scorers. I think the level of play is fun for us, and we are working to continue to raise the bar.”

Throughout the first-half Macalester was content to pack defenders in front of their goal and hope to create their chances on the counter-attack. The Knights nearly moved in front less than 80 seconds into the contest when Mair’s one-timer clanged off the crossbar. Carleton was able to punch through the Scot defense in the 20th minute when Hemmerly brought the ball toward the top of the box and coolly slid a ball to the left wing where Mair raced on to it and lifted a one-touch shot over the Macalester goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

As the halftime whistle blew, Carleton held a 13-5 advantage in shot attempts and would continue the attack in the second half.

In the 57th minute, Mair returned the favor for Hemmerly, when she curled a pass into the box. Hemmerly hustled and was able to get a toe on the ball and poke it past the goaltender for the insurance goal. A mere six minutes later the Knights found their third goal of the afternoon when Emma Wasend (Jr./Denver, Colo./George Washington) had her corner kick cleared back out to her by the corner flag, and her second service attempt found Annika Martensson (Sr./Wauwatosa, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) at the top of the six-yard box for a clean header.

Alice Bieda responded for Macalester in the 69th minute when she won a battle for possession 15 yards out, and floated a shot just under the crossbar. Nora Mertz (Jr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston) wrapped up the scoring with her team leading fifth goal of the season in the 88th minute when she got the ball at the top of the box with her back to goal, took her time to feel out the defense, did a shoulder fake, and spun around to punch the ball into the net. That tally moved her into a tie for seventh place on Carleton’s career goal-scoring list.

Lilly Danna (So./Los Angeles, Calif./Los Angeles CES) played in net all game for the Knights as well and earned her first victory of the season.
