NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s soccer team fell for the first time in conference play, dropping a tight 1-0 result to No. 15-ranked University of St. Thomas.

In the first half the Tommies (10-1-0, 6-0-0 MIAC) possessed the ball well and pressed the Knights (5-2-4, 2-1-3 MIAC) defense, looking for opportunities. Carleton held strong however, ultimately outshooting the visitors, 7-4, in the period. Neither team was able to find the opening goal, and the teams went into halftime tied at zero.

In the second half, the Knights came out hot, almost taking a multi-goal lead within the first few minutes after play resumed. In the 50th minute, sophomore Libby Franchot (Minneapolis, Minn./Blake School) came close to scoring off a header, but the St. Thomas defense was able to keep it clear of the goal line.

Carleton had another great shot at taking the lead in the 53rd minute when Annika Martensson (Sr./Wauwatosa, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) won a loose ball in the attacking third, weaved past multiple defenders, and blasted a shot that curved into the side netting. These close calls seemed to jolt St. Thomas into action, as Kaley Roberts fired home in the 56th minute for the game’s lone goal.

Anna Roethler (So./St Louis Park, Minn./St Louis Park) had a strong game in net for the Knights, finishing with six saves. Despite the loss, Carleton was able to hold its opponent to no more than a single goal, continuing the Knights’ 14-game streak of not allowing a multi-goal performance. This stretch dates back to  dating back to Oct. 18, 2017.

Carleton will look to get back on the winning track when they cross the Cannon River to take on rival St. Olaf College on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 4:00 p.m. Links to live video and live stats can be found via Knights Online.
