CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Knights’ defense was tested throughout the afternoon, but the Carleton College women’s soccer team earned a 1-1 double overtime draw on the road at No. 13-ranked MIT.

Annika Martensson (Wauwatosa, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) gave Carleton the lead with her goal in the 32nd minute. The senior midfielder blasted a 20-yard shot into the upper right corner following a give-and-go with junior Emma Wasend (Denver, Colo./George Washington).

The Knights nearly made that tally stand up against the Engineers, who had not dropped a match on their home turf since September 2015, going 24-0-2 over that span.

MIT first-year Karenna Groff managed the equalizer with 20 seconds remaining in regulation. Her long-range shot sailed beyond the outstretched arms of Carleton keeper Anna Roethler (So./St Louis Park, Minn./St Louis Park), who finished the afternoon with a career-best 15 saves.

“Our goal was to play as a team, read cues, and pressure as a team. We did that,” said Carleton head coach Jocelyn Keller. “The patience Emma and Annika executed for our goal was just what we needed.

“Our back line was on point today. Our centerbacks did a great job at making play predictable and anticipating balls to front runners. Anna Roethler had a stellar first game of the season. MIT had close opportunities throughout the second half and in OT, but we held them off and withstood the pressure. It was a solid showing, and as coaches, we are very proud of the work the women put in during the off season and preseason.”

Carleton’s East Coast tour continues with a 1 p.m. match at Smith College on Saturday, Sept. 1.
