WAVERLY, Iowa – The No. 24-ranked Carleton College women’s soccer team came out on the wrong end of a 1-0 result, dropping a hard-fought battle at Wartburg College, which is receiving votes in the national top-25 poll. This was Carleton’s first setback of the season.

“We were all sad to drop today’s match,” said Carleton head coach Jocelyn Keller. “Wartburg had one very dangerous opportunity, and they capitalized on a great service. We had a few near goals, and our focus is now training at a higher level so we don’t have something similar happen in MIAC play.”

In addition to the identical mascots, both the Carleton Knights and Wartburg Knights put together a very similar afternoon, with each team attempting 12 shots total, six in each half.

With time winding down, Wartburg (4-3-0) finally found the breakthrough goal in the 81st minute. A slick move from Nicole Adair allowed her to send a cross into the box were Alyssa Drewelow corralled the pass and flicked her shot home.

Anna Roethler (So./St Louis Park, Minn./St Louis Park) had another strong game in net for Carleton (4-1-1, 1-0-0 MIAC), coming up with five saves. Annika Martensson (Sr./Wauwatosa, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) led the Carleton attack by producing three shots.

“We have a great team, good energy, and unfortunately, we couldn’t figure it out this afternoon,” said Keller. “We have a big week ahead.”

Carleton will look to get back on the winning track when they travel to Gustavus Adolphus College for a 4:00 p.m. match on Wednesday, Sept. 19. The Knights will then host Macalester College on Saturday, Sept. 22. Links to live video and live stats for both matches can be found via Knights Online.
