Knights Weather Frantic Second Half for Win Over Storm

By Andrew Harvey '15

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Sophomore Ellie Wilson (Roseville, Minn./Roseville) scored a pair of second-half goals as the Carleton College women’s soccer team rallied for a 3-2 victory at Simpson College. Senior Claire McGillem (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) tallied the other goal for the Knights who overcame a pair of one-goal deficits in the season opener for both squads.

The Knights appeared to have the offensive momentum in the first half, taking the only six shots of the first period but the contest remained scoreless into the second half.

Simpson struck first as Heather Adolph knocked a shot home in the 53rd minute. Wilson knotted the score at 1-1 as she converted a breakaway in the 80th minute. That score would spark a frantic few minutes as the teams scored four goals over a three-minute period.

Barely 90 seconds later, the Knights got caught off guard on a set piece and Adolph scored for the second time. Just 55 seconds passed before McGillem—making her collegiate debut—unleashed a shot from the left side, her 35-yarder eluding Megan Petersen to even the score at 2-2.

After only 19 more seconds ticked off the clock, Bailey Ulbricht (Fy./Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) set up Wilson for the game-winner and her second career two-goal performance. The Knights played solid defense over the final eight minutes to seal the victory.

“We played a strong first half and had some opportunities but more importantly the play reflected our preseason work,” said Jocelyn Keller, who picked up the win in her first game at the help of the Carleton program. “The second-half battle and coming back two times is a testament to the drive and willingness this team has to push themselves. This was a nice way to kick off our season."

Carleton next travels to Waverly, Iowa to take on Wartburg College on Sunday, Sept 2.
