Knights Drop MIAC Opener to St. Kate’s

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Carleton College women’s soccer team was edged out of the MIAC opener, 1-0, by St. Catherine University. The Knights possessed a 16-7 advantage in shots and 8-2 in corner kicks yet the hosts were unable to break through against the Wildcats.

A mild drizzle fell throughout most of the contest, resulting in less than ideal playing conditions.

St. Catherine had an early opportunity to grab the lead 70 seconds into the contest, but Lensa Gurmessa’s shot was headed off the line by Carleton defender Erin Wilson (Jr./Novato, Calif./Marin Academy).

The Knights’ best opportunity of the first half came in the 10th minute as Bailey Ulbricht’s (So./Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) rocket from the left wing required a sprawling deflection by St. Kate’s goalkeeper Danielle Mendez.

St. Catherine finally broke the scoreless tie in the 77th minute when Elly Leyva split two defenders and put the ball inside the far post. Ulbricht nearly delivered the equalizer in the 89th minute when her shot struck the crossbar.

The Wildcats ran off the remaining time to secure their first MIAC victory since Sept. 29, 2010, snapping a 19-game losing streak in conference play.

The Knights’ homestand continues with a tough matchup on Saturday, Sept. 15. Carleton hosts the College of Saint Benedict in a 1 p.m. contest pitting the two MIAC co-champions from a year ago. Knights Online will feature live video of the match.
