NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Ellie Wilson (So./Roseville, Minn./Roseville) chased down a long ball over the defense and turned it into the game-winning score as the Carleton College women’s soccer team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 1-0. The Knights, ranked No. 3 in the region and receiving votes in the most recent NSCAA national poll, improved to 3-0 on the season with their second straight shutout.

Carleton controlled the run of play over the first portion of the game, taking the contest’s first six shots. The Blugolds eventually found their rhythm and had the last five attempts of the first half.

It was more of the same shortly after intermission as UW-Eau Claire had four corner kicks and another shot in the opening 15 minutes of the half. But the game changed in the 61st minute when midfielder Claire McGillem (Sr./Barrington, Ill./Barrington) sent a long ball over the Blugold defense.

Wilson used her speed and out-ran the UWEC back line. With her first touch, she lifted the ball up in the air over goalkeeper Nina Behrenbrinker, who had raced off her line in an attempt to collect the pass.

The shot from 35 yards outs bounced into the back of the net, resulting in Wilson’s third goal of the young season.

Mikayla Coulombe (Fy./Crystal, Minn./Crystal, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) registered four saves and corralled a number of loose balls in the box in notching another clean sheet.

The Knights continue their six-match home stand with back-to-back games against UW-Stevens Point and College of St. Scholastica on September 8-9. Both contests begin at 2 p.m. and Knights Online will once again feature live video.
