Banana Slugs Pull Away From Knights in Second Half

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Despite a second straight 10-save performance from Mikayla Coulombe (So./Crystal, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret’s), the Carleton College women’s soccer team lost its home opener, 4-0, to the Banana Slugs of UC-Santa Cruz.

Carleton (1-2) played fairly evenly with UC-Santa Cruz (3-0) in the first half, being narrowly outshot by a 7-5 margin. The Banana Slugs got on the scoreboard in the 29th minute, however, when Dru Dowis sent in a cross from the left side along the six-yard line, which Sarah Sadler finished to give her squad the lead.

Right out of the gate in the second half, Santa Cruz extended its lead in the 46th minute when Chay Thomas placed a shot over a leaping Coulombe and just under the crossbar from 25 yards out to widen the gap to 2-0.

As the second half progressed, the Knights had difficulty generating momentum and managed just one shot on goal over the period. UC-Santa Cruz tallied two more goals to put the game away. In the 59th minute Justine Dougherty tapped in a cross on the ground, and in the 71st Sam Li managed to knock in a rebound inside the 18-yard box.

UC-Santa Cruz now returns home to California after going 3-0 against its MiAC opposition. It adds its latest tally to its 2-1 wins over then-No. 17 Concordia and St. Thomas.

Carleton’s schedule does not get an easier as the Knights return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 6 to face off against No. 3 Wheaton College on Bell Field at 4:00 p.m. central time. Live stats and video of the match will be available via Knights Online.
