ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Despite an early goal from Arielle Koshkin (Sr./Oakland, Calif./Head Royce School) in the 10th minute, the Knights were unable to hold off the No. 15 team in the nation as the Carleton College women’s soccer team suffered a 3-1 setback against the College of St. Benedict.

“We created opportunities throughout the day, but came up short,” said Carleton head coach Jocelyn Keller. “St. Bens countered quickly with speed of play and movement off the ball.”

Koshkin’s goal came as an early strike, when she followed up a rebounded shot from Nina Shapiro (Sr./Westwood, Mass./Westwood) to give the Knights the advantage.

Carleton’s (5-5-1, 3-2-1 MIAC) momentum would be short lived, though, as the Blazers’ Peggy Renier tallied the equalizer a minute later off of a corner kick. Saint Benedict (8-1-1, 4-1-1 MIAC) pulled ahead shortly before halftime and tallied a score in the second half to secure the victory.

Mikayla Coulombe (So./Crystal, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret’s) had a busy day in net, equaling her season high with 10 saves in the loss. She had three excellent stops on breakaways, keeping Carleton within range.

“Mikayla kept us in the game a number of times today,” Keller said. “We’ll need to refocus, find our rhythm, and play with confidence on the road Wednesday.”

The Knights travel to Decorah, Iowa for a women’s-men’s non-conference doubleheader at Luther College. The ladies take the field at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, followed by the gentlemen. Both games will video streamed by Luther with links available on Knights Online.
