EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Nora Mertz (So./Evanston, Ill./Evanston) scored twice in the early going and Libby Franchot (Fy./Minneapolis, Minn./Blake School) added the game winner late as the Carleton College women’s soccer team picked up a 3-2 victory at UW-Eau Claire in the season opener for both squads.

Mertz, who led the Knights in points last season, was not in the Carleton (1-0-0) starting lineup but after entering as a sub in the fourth minute, she made an instant impact. The sophomore tallied her first goal of the afternoon on Carleton’s first shot of the day. Three minutes later her hustle led to another scored. Mertz tried to chase down a long ball over the Blugold defense, but a defender had inside position. Mertz pressured the defender, who played the ball back to the UWEC goalie. Mertz then sprinted toward the keeper, whose clearance attempt struck the Knights forward and deflected toward the now open goal. Mertz won the foot race to the loose ball and tapped the ball across the line, giving Carleton the 2-0 advantage.

The Blugolds (0-1-0) got one goal back before intermission and when the hosts added the equalizer in the 82nd minute, it seemed as if UWEC had the momentum.

In the 88th minute, however, Ruby Kazemi (Jr./Missoula, Mont./Hellgate) ran down a pass up the right wing and delivered a well-struck cross into the box where Franchot directed the ball home for her first collegiate tally and the game-winning goal.

Anna Roethler (Fy./St Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) registered four saves in picking up her first victory in goal.

Carleton will hold its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 2 as Nebraska Wesleyan visits Bell Field at 3 p.m.
