NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College swimming and diving teams hosted the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University for a dual meet on Saturday, with the Carleton women getting the necessary points during the final event to claim a 152-148 victory.

“We knew this meet was going to require some big efforts from every team member in order for both squads to have a chance at winning,” said Carleton head coach Andy Clark. “The Johnnies and Bennies are two strong teams who race well, and it was a back-and-forth battle all the way through the meet.

“For meets like this, it isn't enough to just win the event, you need to get the back-end points, and both Carleton squads did a great job of closing out their races to get those points. The kind of energy we had today was fantastic, especially coming off our hardest week of training.”

The Carleton women won a total of nine events on the day, including the final race of the day, the 200-yard freestyle relay. Anisa Lester (Sr./Corte Madera, Calif./The Branson School), Eveline Dowling (Jr./Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West), Morgan Mayer (So./Garret Park, Md./Georgetown Day), and Caroline Mather (Jr./Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) won the event with their time of 1:41.67. The Knights also took third in the same race to accumulate enough points to prevent the teams from settling for a tie.

The day also started with a relay win, this one in the 200-yard medley relay. Emma Lederer (So./Madison, Wis./West), Ada Meyer (So./Seattle, Wash./Ingraham), Mayer, and Mather joined forces to clock a time of 1:52.76.

Lederer later added triumphs in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:02.81 and 100-yard butterfly at 1:03.98. Mather was also a dual winner as she was first to the wall in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races with times of 24.71 and 55.19, respectively.

Meyer posted a six-second margin of victory in the 200-yard breaststroke with her time of 2:31.20, and Kyle Fraser-Mines (Fy./Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsborough) prevailed in the 200-yard freestyle at 2:04.82.

Carleton’s other event victory came on the 3-meter diving board where Amy Roach (Sr./Bethesda, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase) totaled 235.00 points. Fellow diver Phoebe Smith (Jr./Dallas, Texas/Hockaday) was the “Can of Corn” award recipient thanks to her third-place finishes on the 3-meter board (181.80) and a fourth-place result on the 1-meter springboard (185.90).

The Knights will hold their final full swimming and diving home meet of 2018 on Saturday, Jan. 27 when Carleton hosts St. Olaf for Senior Day beginning at 11 a.m.
