Rookies Cameron and Kirkland shine against Gusties

NORTHFIELD, Minn. –  First-years Alison Cameron (Reno, Nev./Reno) and Kapani Kirkland (Mendota Heights, Minn./Convent of the Visitation) claimed individual event victories as the Carleton College women’s swimming and diving team hosted Gustavus Adolphus College at Thorpe Pool. This was the Knights’ first competition in a month.

Cameron won the 200-yard butterfly with her time of 2:18.94. The rookie also added a second-place result in the 100-yard butterfly when she was out-touched despite a season-best time of 1:01.66.

After taking second place in the 1-meter diving competition with a total score of 197.55, Kirkland later posted the top score (206.20) on the 3-meter board.

The Knights notched eight other runner-up performances:
• Emma Lederer (Jr./Madison, Wis./West), Ada Meyer (Jr./Seattle, Wash./Ingraham), Claire Neid (Fy./Denver, Colo./George Washington), and Caroline Mather (Sr./Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) combined on a time of 1:51.63 in the 200-yard medley relay.
• Lederer, swimming a dual meet for the first time this season, took second in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.15) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:19.68).
• Meyer was the runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke as she reached the wall at 1:09.07. She was also second in the 200-yard race with a time of 2:32.50.
• In the 50-yard freestyle, only 0.01 second separated each team’s top sprinter as Maggie Webster (24.57) edged Mather (24.58), who also claimed second place in the 100 freestyle at 54.85.
• Mather, Neid, Eveline Dowling (Sr./Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West), and Kyle Fraser-Mines (So./Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsborough) finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.18.

Carleton is right back in the water on Saturday, Jan. 12 as they head to the Luther College Sprint Invite in Decorah, Iowa. Links to live video and live results are available via Knights Online.
