MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Sophie Pilhofer (Sr./Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Visitation) posted a NCAA “B” cut time and placed second in the 100-yard freestyle on the final day of action at the MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships. The Carleton College women finished fifth in the team competition.

Pilhofer posted the top time during the preliminary round of the 100 freestyle, touching the wall at 51.79, a full second improvement on her previous career-best and making her the second-fastest swimmer in Carleton history for this event behind Marie Marsman ’04. Like she did a year ago, Pilhofer finished second during the finals, this time at 51.93.

During the morning prelims of the 100 free, Milana Socha (Jr./Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) edged teammate Erin McDuffie (Sr./Anchorage, Alaska/Service) for the final spot in the championship final by 0.01 seconds. Tonight, Socha placed seventh at 53.20, while McDuffie won the consolation final in 52.84, a new personal-best and fifth all-time at Carleton.

Gustavus Adolphus won its eighth team title, accumulating 743 points. St. Thomas was next at 691 points, followed by St. Olaf (630), Saint Benedict (395), and Carleton (349).

Molly Spence (Sr./Tacoma, Wash./Woodrow Wilson) got the evening off to a good start as she garnered All-MIAC recognition with her third-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle, the session’s first race. She was already the school record holder in the event and touched the wall this time at 17:56.01.

Grace Cormier (Sr./Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) improved upon her prelim time and place sixth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:10.08, which now ranks sixth in team history.

Samantha Sharpe (Jr./San Rafael, Calif./San Rafael) advanced to the consolation final of the 200-yard butterfly, placing 13th with a time of 2:19.08.

Socha, Pilhofer, Madison McBride (Fy./Elko, Minn./Lakeville South), and McDuffie brought the conference meet to a close with their fourth-place result in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships will be held on March 20-23 in Shenandoah, Texas. Pilhofer is in an excellent position to receive an invitation after recording a time of 23.40 for the 50-yard freestyle and tonight’s time in the 100-yard freestyle. Additionally, the 200-yard freestyle relay is also in contention for a spot at nationals after opening the conference meet with a time of 1:35.70, another NCAA “B” cut time.
