MINNEAPOLIS -- Sophie Pilhofer’s (Jr./Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Visitation) victory in the 50-yard freestyle highlighted the competition for the Carleton College women’s swimming and diving team on day one of the MIAC Championships. Pilhofer was first to the wall with a NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 23.81.
Pilhofer becomes the fourth Carleton woman to win the title of fastest female in the conference, joining Emily Peterson (1999), Marie Marsman (2001, ’02, ’03, ‘05) and Jen Gratz (2006) as winners of the 50 free.
While Pilhofer’s individual effort grabbed the spotlight, the Knights had several solid performances on day one and sit in fourth place with 99 points, three points behind St. Benedict for third place.
Carleton opened the championships with second-place performance in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Pilhofer, Milana Socha (So./Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton), Maggie Alexander (Sr./Tigard, Ore./Tualatin), and Erin McDuffie (Jr./Anchorage, Alaska/Service) earned All-MIAC distinction after finishing in1:35.97.
Alexander returned the water in the next event and grabbed another all-conference accolade with a third-place result in the 500-yard freestyle. She touched the wall at 5:05.75. Molly Spence (Jr./Tacoma, Wash./Woodrow Wilson) added a 13th-place showing in the event.
Grace Cormier (Jr./Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) was Carleton’s lone point scorer in the 200-yard individual medley, placing 13th at 2:15.25.
The 50 freestyle was next. In addition to Pilhofer first-place finish, McDuffie won the consolation final at 24.37, and Socha took seventh at 24.29. Not to be outdone, Erik Klontz (Jr./Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) won the 50 freestyle for the Carleton men.
The Knights concluded the day with a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. Annie Metcalf (Sr./Bath, Maine/Morse), Alison Coogan (Fy./River Forest, Ill./Oak Park & River Forest), Pilhofer and McDuffie combined for a time of 4:00.42.
The conference championships continue Friday and Saturday with prelims slated for 10:30 a.m. and event finals set for 6:30 p.m.
