TEMPE, Ariz. – Both the Carleton College men and women’s tennis teams had players earn regional and national recognition in the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA D-III singles and doubles rankings of the 2018-19 campaign.

Headlining the rankings for the men is All-American Leo Vithoontien (So./Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School), who is No. 3-ranked singles player in the central region and No. 15 in the nation by the ITA.

Coming off of a phenomenal first year with the Knights where he was named the ITA Central Region rookie-of-the-year with a 20-2 overall record, Vithoontien finished second in the singles competition at the ITA Midwest Regional this fall.

Vithooniten was joined by William Walsh (Fy./San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights), who after advancing to the quarterfinals of the ITA Midwest Regional/Midwest Open this fall, was named the No. 14-ranked singles player in the central region.

The men’s tennis program also saw two of their doubles teams receive regional recognition. Vithoontien and Jordon O'Kelly (Sr./Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) are ranked No.5 in the region after advancing to the semifinals in their ITA meet this fall.

They are joined on the regional doubles rankings by Aaron Goodman (Sr./Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park) and partner Xander Zuczek (So./Westerly, R.I./St. Bernard) who come in at No. 7.

Vithoontien and O’Kelly were placed at No. 19 in the nation for doubles pairs according to the ITA rankings.

For the women’s team, first-year Sonya Romanenko (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) was ranked No. 16 singles player in the region. The regional recognition follows a strong showing in the fall that included both a singles and doubles victory in the team’s season-opening dual-meet against regional powerhouse, UW-Whitewater, followed by a quarterfinal singles appearance in the ITA Midwest Regional.

The women’s top doubles pair, Kristina Conrad (Sr./Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) and Madeline Prins (Jr./Pacific Palisades, Calif./Palisades Charter) are tabbed at No. 6 in the region and No. 22 in the nation by the ITA.

Conrad and Prins placed second at the ITA Midwest Regional/Midwest Open after dropping a tightly contested finals match 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.

The women will wait to kick off their indoor season until after the new year with their first match coming on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019 when they host NCAA D-I program University of North Dakota at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville, Minn.

The men’s team begins on Jan. 26 as well, traveling to the Winona Tennis Center to take on Saint Mary’s University and UW-La Crosse for their opening matches of the indoor season.
