NORTHFIELD, Minn. – With a 9-0 triumph over No. 4 seed Bethel University on Friday afternoon, the top-seeded Carleton College women’s tennis team advanced to the finals of the MIAC Playoffs. The Knights will host No. 2 seed Gustavus Adolphus College in the conference tournament championship match on Sunday with the MIAC’s automatic berth in the NCAA Championships at stake.

Carleton (16-4), listed at No. 37 in the latest national rankings, raced out to a 3-0 advantage after doubles. Danielle Vasiliev (Jr./Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) and Caitlin Shea (Sr./Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township West) notched an 8-2 win at the top spot in the lineup, duplicating the score posted by Madeline Prins (Fy./Pacific Palisades, Calif./Palisades Charter) and Caitlin Eichten (Sr./Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) at the third slot. The pairing of Alana Danieu (Jr./East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and Kristina Conrad (So./Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) improved to 9-0 this season after recording an 8-3 decision.

Bethel (18-5) found the singles portion of the match just as difficult, with the Knights winning five of the six contests in straight sets.

Prins brought Carleton to the verge of clinching the team victory with her 6-1, 6-0 result at No. 5 singles. That outcome pushed the rookie’s singles record to 13-5 this year. Danieu sealed the win for the Knights by a 6-0, 6-3 tally at the sixth spot, and in the process, improved to 12-2 on the season.

Zoe Park (Fy./Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) added a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles, making her now 18-2 in 2017. That is the highest dual-match win total by a Knight since 2013.

Vasiliev followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win atop the lineup. Conrad continued her amazing sophomore campaign, improving to 17-1 in singles with her 6-2, 6-3 triumph at the fourth slot.

The No. 3 singles match was the last to conclude and required a super tiebreaker as Shea rallied from a set down to prevail 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (12-10).

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton returns to the Pat Lamb Tennis Courts for the final of the MIAC Playoffs on Sunday, May 7 at 1 p.m. The opponent will be No. 38-ranked Gustavus, which bested No. 3 seed St. Thomas, 5-1, in the semifinals. This will be the Knights’ fifth trip to the finals of the postseason tournament spanning the last six seasons. Carleton won in 2012, 2013, and 2014, but will be looking at avenge last year’s championship-match loss to the Gusties.
