WINONA, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s tennis team remains unbeaten after dispatching of Saint Mary’s University by an 8-1 margin. Both squads entered play regionally ranked, with the Knights holding down the No. 6 spot, while the Cardinals were ranked No. 24.
Carleton’s lone loss of the match came at first doubles where the SMU pairing of sisters McKennah and Bailey Edwards—ranked No. 15 in the central region—prevailed 8-5.
The Knights (3-0, 2-0 MIAC) countered with triumphs in the other doubles matches as Molly Hemes (So./Green Bay, Wis./Preble) and Anne Lombardi (So./Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) won 8-0, and Katherine Greenberg (So./St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) and Erin Wilson (So./Novato, Calif./Marin Academy) were victorious 8-5 at third doubles.
After dropping their doubles match, Kathryn Schmidt (Sr./Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) and Bridget Doyle (Jr./Mendota Heights, Minn./Visitation) matched up with the Edwards sisters atop the singles lineup. Both matches required a third set, but each time the victory point went into the Knights’ column.
Schmidt and McKennah Edwards squared off in a contest of regionally-ranked singles players. Edwards won the first set 6-2, but Schmidt evened things up by taking the second set, 6-1. In the third set the Carleton senior got the better of the SMU rookie by a 10-7 margin.
Doyle took the opener of her match against Bailey Edwards by a 6-4 score, only to watch the match squared 6-1. Once again the Knights prevailed by a 10-7 total.
Lombardi blanked a third Edwards sister 6-0, 6-0 at third singles, while Hemes, Greenberg, and Felicity Flesher (So./Oxford, Miss./Oxford) also won in straight sets.
The Knights will put their unblemished record on the line Friday, Feb. 17 when they take on Macalester College at 7:30 p.m.
